About Me
I am a mature age student studying a Bachelor of Cyber Security via Cloud learning through Deakin University.
Background
After High School I qualified as a Maintenance Fitter. I have enjoyed my time in the maintenance field performing a range of tasks from basic servicing of small engines up to large multi-trade fabrication projects.
Motivation
I have always loved computers, my first computer was a second hand Commodore Amiga. I can still remember if a game on a 3.5 inch floppy wouldn’t run the first step was to slide the metal shutter open and blow into the disk. Step two, blow into the disk drive. Finally if it still wouldn’t run it was time to remove the metal shutter; it was only there for storage anyway. Recently I have taken an interest in the Cyber Security field, so it wasn’t a hard decision on what my next big challenge should be.
Future
I plan to complete my degree by the end of 2021 and from there I will investigate any short course qualifications I may require to improve my employ-ability. I intend to join the job market in early 2022.
Roles
The two roles I believe I am most suited for are Penetration Tester and Cyber Security Consultant. These roles align well with my current skills set that I believe is transferable from my trade experience.
Penetration Tester. My first preference would be to secure a role as a penetration tester. The job involves solving problems and thinking outside the box. My time as a Maintenance Fitter would have prepared me well for this role. As part of my role I was required to fabricate something that couldn’t be bought or modify an item to make it do something it wasn’t originally designed to do. I believe when faced with a problem there is always an elegant solution, you just have to be willing to try it.
Cyber Security Consultant. The role of a Cyber Security Consultant interest me due to is holistic view and customer orientated problem solving. A Maintenance Fitter is very similar, we know a little about everything and use that to solve complex problems. It is often said ‘we know exactly enough to make us dangerous’. Having a basic understanding of how different systems worked enable me to provide a thorough solution to the customer or diagnose a fault on a complex system.
Goals
I believe competition promotes the best in people, it is a personal goal of mine to lead a team at Def con. Def con is a hacking convention held every year in Las Vegas. It hosts Cyber security public speakers and various hacking competitions; the key one being the Capture the Flag (CTF) (Tangent 2018).
